Meet the Team

  • Sylvia Barnhill

    OWNER AND FOUNDER

    Hi, I’m Sylvia Barnhill, the heart behind Lowcountry Whimsy. While our brick-and-mortar space has been part of the Lowcountry community since 2020, my journey began much earlier—in 2007—with a simple offering of crystals, candles, and journals. What started as a personal passion soon blossomed into something bigger: a retail experience rooted in connection, intention, and everyday magic.

    At Lowcountry Whimsy, every item you find is handpicked by me. I seek out creators, artisans, and small businesses who share our values—many of whom are giving back to their communities or chasing a dream of their own. Some of our longest-standing and best-loved lines include Flying Wish Paper, Eco Candle Company, and crystals from local family-owned suppliers.

    More than a shop, Lowcountry Whimsy is about creating moments of JOY—for you, for the makers we support, and for anyone who walks through our doors. Whether you’re shopping for intention, inspiration, or simply something that feels a little magical, we hope you find something here that speaks to your spirit.

    MANAGER

    Hello! My name is Sophie, I’m the store manager and have been working at Lowcountry whimsy for almost 5 years. My favorite part of my job is interacting with the community. I love hearing people’s stories and helping people find the perfect gift or trinket that brings them joy. If you’ve ever come into the store while I’m working, you know I love to chat with y’all. 

    Fun fact: I’ve lived in 3 continents, Asia, Europe and North America. 

    Favorite Products: Flying Wish paper and DIY Book Nook kits 

    Favorite candle scent: Beach Bum for the summer and Homesick in the fall for sure! 

  • Jenna Pace

    SALES ASSOCIATE

    Hi! My name is Jenna, I’m one of Lowcountry Whimsy’s sales associates! I have been working for Lowcountry Whimsy for about 4 years. My favorite thing about working here is talking to all of our customers and hearing all their stories. I also love getting to work with the best coworkers anyone could ask for. 

    Fun fact: I’m originally a New York girly. 

    Favorite products: All of the jewelry and the 3-D printed animals. 

    Favorite candle scent: Lovespell and Seagrass.

    SALES ASSOCIATE

    Hi! My name is Emma and I’ve worked at Lowcountry Whimsy for over 2 years. My favorite part of my job is talking to customers about the many crystals we have in the store. I love helping them pick the perfect one!

    Fun fact: I am currently studying geology in college!

    Favorite products: Eco room sprays and tarot/oracle decks

    Favorite candle scent: Honey Mango! 

About Us

The first seeds of what would eventually grow into Lowcountry Whimsy began to sprout in 2007 when Sylvia was still running her full-time Reiki practice. She noticed that her clients were often interested in purchasing a book she would reference or a stone she would use in a session. As she expanded her services and moved locations, she also began growing an inventory of items her clients could purchase. In 2020, her business experienced rapid growth as people started seeking answers.

This led Sylvia to open the doors to Lowcountry Whimsy in December 2020, where she still offers a selection of spiritual services alongside the lovingly curated inventory of the shop. We offer a wide variety of spiritual books, crystals, divination tools, gifts, home décor, handmade jewelry, and one of Charleston's most comprehensive selections of tarot cards!

The mission of Lowcountry Whimsy is to help others find joy in their lives. We've created a playful, light-filled space that we hope fills customers with a sense of whimsy when they enter the store. We aim to provide a little something for everyone while also supporting other small businesses, many of them local.
